Bhut Jolokia (Ghost Peppers)

The Bhut Jolokia Chilli Peppers  (SHU 1,041,427) are  red or orange and grow to about three inches, and, unlike other hot peppers have a rough, uneven shape. Because of their new-found popularity they can now be found growing all over the world, notably in India.

They are now readily available on the internet or in shops everywhere, either dried, or fresh and can be easily grown if you prefer.

And you don’t have to  like spicy foods to enjoy the extraordinary flavour in these peppers which have a distinct sweet taste and can be used in sauces, curries, salsas, dips and even desserts.

Also in India, they are often used to ward off summer heat,  making the consumer perspire which apparently results in cooling the body.

Perhaps more unusually, again in the same country,  peppers are  smeared on fences in order to keep wild elephants at a safe distance!

A versatile hot pepper indeed…
